Tomlinson Talks | Thought Crime and Islamic Blasphemy Laws in Britain

In this week’s episode of Tomlinson Talks, Connor discusses the Labour government’s plan to prosecute thought crimes in Britain, by reintroducing non-crime hate incidents and adopting the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims’ definition of Islamophobia.

He reviews the College of Policing’s history of guidance for non-crime hate incidents, dating back to the Macpherson Report (1999), which declared the Metropolitan Police to be ‘institutionally racist’; and examines the revisions made to NCHIs after Harry Miller’s 2000 case against the College of Policing, and Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s subsequent Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act (2022).

He also details the Home Office’s efforts to criminalise Islamophobia, and the special protections afforded to Muslims by Michael Gove’s obsession with RICU.
