Racial Representation in Education: Do Teachers' Ethnicities Really Impact Student Success?

According to new research from Durham University's Evidence Centre for Education, it is unlikely that students in some regions of England will ever have a teacher who shares their racial or ethnic background. The centre's director, Professor Stephen Gorard, claims that this lack of representation has had a 'considerable impact' on students from ethnic minority backgrounds. In an interview with The Guardian, Gorard explained, “Not being taught by someone who sounds and looks like them could affect pupils for things like suspensions and exclusions ... their happiness, expectations, and aspirations.”
